You Down With OPC (Optimus Prime Cake)?

Yeah you know me!

Friday was River's 4th birthday!  It's hard to believe he's 4, although he acts older than four most of the time.  Saturday was Ronnie's 29th birthday!  Ha Ha!  He's getting old!  This is the last year of the twenties and he's not taking it very well!  Really, though, it's all down hill after you turn 21!

Anywho, we celebrated River's (and Ronnie's) birthday on Saturday.  I, of course, am the designated birthday cake maker - that's why I took the classes in the first place!  This year, Riv wanted an Optimus Prime cake.  I was certain that he would want Buzz Lightyear or a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle cake, but nooooo, he wanted freaking Optimus Prime!  [said in a whiney sarcastic tone!]  I wasn't sure how I was going to pull it off.  I wanted to do a 3-tier cake with each tier representing a portion of OP's body.  Adam quickly talked me out of that, since he said that I ALWAYS take on too much with the cakes I do.  So, I agreed to do OP's head and a very simplistic representation of OP's head.

I took the cake to Mom's with it stacked but not iced on the outside.  I didn't want to mess anything up in the transportation.  River was excited about the idea of a cake, but looked a little disappointed when he just say 4 layers of chocolate cake and no Optimus Prime in sight.  I explained that the cake would "transform" into Optimus Prime!  That concept was magical!  Riv watched me decorate his cake and transform it into my rendering of Optimus Prime.  By the end, he was so excited!

I am definitely not the best cake decorator, but 4 year-olds seem to be quite impressed with my work!  That makes it all worthwhile!

Fried Hog Basket

Sounds interesting, doesn't it!  Well that's what our receipt read when Mom and I checked out at my new favorite local dive, Captain Ernie's!  This place is like a nice, hole-in-the-wall restaurant.  It's low-key with tables and chairs that you'd find in a church fellowship hall, but it has a bar that serves beer and wine, and Jimmy Buffet music playing.

Mom and I ate there yesterday for lunch.  We both had the Fried Fish Basket.  Sounds healthy!  We chose the Hog Fish as our fish of choice, since my brother said it was really good fish.  Ummm...yeah...it was A-MAZ-ING!  It's not a fishy fish - nice, clean, mild, yet flavorful!  We also added fried plantains to our Fried Hog Basket.  Again, amazing!  If you've never had plantains, they are definitely worth a try!   A plantain actually looks like a big banana.  The taste is kind of a mix between a sweet potato and a banana.  So, a fried plantain is like a a fat, sweet potato fry with a slight sweet note at the end!  Yummmy!

The Fried Hog Basket was not greasy, and it didn't really taste fried, but it was!  I brought a little big home for Adam to taste.  He loved the hog fish as well...and Ryne ended up eating the rest...and the rest of the plantains too!

If you are ever in West Knoxville, stop by Captain Ernie's off Campbell Station Rd.  You won't regret it!

18 months

It is soooo hard to believe that my baby is a year and a half!  I still don't want to believe it.  Time is passing too quickly, even though this little phase that Ryne is in is driving me bonkers!

So here's his stats:

Weight:  whopping 23 lbs and 0.5 oz, which is 18% (he's gained half an ounce since 17 months old)
Length:  32", which is 50% ( he was in the twenty-something percentile at 15 months, so he's growing like a weed.
Head: 19", which is 55% (this is down.  He was in the 75% percentile at one time.  So basically his body is catching up to his big brain!)

Language development:  good - too bad whining is not language development or Ryne would be getting higher marks here!  Ha!  I read on the little 18 month info sheet from the doctor that he should be saying 6 - 10 words.  I decided to count all the words that I could remember that he knows and uses and he's at least in his 30s, if not more - it's hard to remember them all.  He is also getting better at pronouncing words properly too.  He used to call an apple a "babble" or "bapple".  Now he can say "apple."  He makes weird sounds a lot too.  Adam things he is trying to make more sounds for new letters and words.

Comprehension:  more than you'd imagine and more than he lets on!

Ryne is really enjoying Dr. Seuss books right now.  He actually lets me read to him again, which I really enjoy.  I was worried for several months when the books in our house started collecting dust bunnies!  They say that reading to your child is one of the best things you can do, but reading to a moving, screaming target is less than enjoyable!  I am going to take him to the library and the bookstore more, so we can explore more books.  Today I saw some of my old favorites - the kid with the purple crayon.  I don't even remember the actual name of it, but I saw the cover and had a moment!  Memories!

Ryne is also really enjoying blocks, of all kinds.  He has the old wooden ABC blocks and tons of Mega Blocks.  He really likes knocking down any tower of blocks I build.  I have to admit that that is a little disappointing.  I work really hard on my towers of blocks, and for some strange reason I think that Ryne will be in awe when he sees my magnificent tower.  He does do his little "O"face for half a second and then brings down the wrath of the right hand and in one fell swoop, my tower is obliterated - one tiny block left in a pile of rubble!  Ugh!  All that hard work!  At least Ryne is sweet enough to help me build it back...and then knock it down again!

He likes to color with crayons and markers and he LOVES play dough.  He tries to eat them all!  I have to watch him like a hawk.  If I blink, he will lick play dough or have red crayon all over his pearly whites!  Nothing like brushing your kids teeth and thinking his tongue might be bleeding profusely!  He is also getting better at putting toys away - thank you Lord!  Our house looks like Toys R Us exploded.  Throw in some Cheerios, Goldfish and Craisins and you got a toddler party mix!

Ryne is also dancing more!  He loves to dance.  He really doesn't watch TV all that much, but when the music for a TV show comes on, he will dance, bounce, keep up his feet, head bang and drop it like it's hot - all at one time!  The cutest thing ever is when he dances with his Elmo (aka: "Mo Mo") house shoes on!  I took Ryne to Kindermusik at Borders today thinking that he would like the music, songs and dancing.  I was wrong!  He'd rather read Fox in Sox and the Olivia books or crawl under tables and in between bookshelves!  And to think they usually do these classes at Smart Toys and Books!  Are you kidding me!  My child was running through the group today like his head was on fire and the only way to put it out was to pull every book off the shelf!  What do they think would happen in a toy store?!!  Adam witnessed a few minutes of this and we unanimously agreed that we aren't throwing away our money on group classes at this point.

Sadly, I'd like to take Ryne to group stuff so he will learn, in a fun way, that there are rules to follow in different places and that he can't always run around like a maniac.  However, why do I want to pay a couple hundred dollars for a 45 minute power struggle?  UMMM, no - it's like that enough at home!  I'm that mother that gets the looks from the other mothers that say "you don't discipline your child!"  Someone told me about a book for the "strong-willed child" and said that basically the author says that everyone should have a strong-willed child because they would have more empathy for other mother/parents!  Empathize, don't criticize!

We discipline Ryne, plenty!  However, he's as strong-willed as they come - 45+ minute tantrums over wanting bottles, vacuums, and popsicles!  He follows me around the house, torturing me with his screams, pushing and pulling me in the direction of the object of his heart's desire!  I think we could probably beat Ryne within an inch of his life and he'd still want whatever it is that he wants.  Good thing we don't use corporal punishment!  And no, spanking won't solve the problem (I know what you're thinking).  I read in a child-discipline book that most spanking is really a parent throwing their own temper tantrum...and essentially taking it out on their child's rear end.   Ryne has enough of those.  He's coming into his Terrible Twos (doctor confirmed it today), so one less hissy fit is helpful!  Someone's gotta keep their head about them - it might as well be me!

The next few months are going to be exciting for sure - whether I like it or not and for good reason and bad!  Never a dull moment.  Also, Ryne is available for babysitting/birth control purposes for all teenagers!  Seriously, you'll have to beg them to give you grandchildren one day!

The Signs They Are A Changin'

This news is blowing up all over the internet and social networking sites!  There is now a 13th Zodiac sign, Ophiuchus, and thus it has changed the dates of the other zodiac signs!  So what does that mean for those of us who have grown up thinking we were a certain sign?  I still can't make heads or tails of whether or not I'm now a Cancer and no longer a Leo, or if I'm still a "Leo" because that was the sign at the time I was born.  I have to say that I'm not digging Cancer - it's a disease that steals people from our lives!  I'd rather stay a lioness!

Check your new zodiac sign out for yourself and check out the new sign here.

This is Where the Magic Happens

I remember back in the day when I used to watch Cribs and drool over all the obnoxious, overindulgent decor in the homes of "celebs."  Whenever it came to viewing their bedroom, they'd say "this is where the magic happens."  I'm sure some of them literally had magic happening in their bedrooms!  I'm sure their butlers are also out of work magicians who would put on magic shows every morning.

Well the magic going on in our bedroom is redecorating magic.  I have been magically able to redecorate with little money to work with...cuz we po'.  Apparently we are so poor that we don't have enough to even spell the word out all the way!

I will have to track down a before picture, but it involved ivory and beige zebra print!

 After

 Swing-arm wall sconce

 Grapevine squares with pictures

 Painted Grapevine Wreath

 Mirrors:  painted, crackeld and white-washed

Painted Grapevine wreath up close

So here's the Magical Boudoir Breakdown:

Brown Quilt:  already had (Pottery Barn)
Duvet:  already had (Pottery Barn)
Shams: same as above...apparently we weren't "po'" at one point in our marriage!
Curtains:  dupioni silk (Pottery Barn)  - all courtesy of "Santa"
Body Pillow:  already had (got it when I was pregnant)
Sheets: $45ish - Target (compared to the previous $179 zebra print sheet set from Pottery Barn) we made out like bandits this time!
Teal Boudoir Pillow:  $12 Kirklands
Swing-arm sconces:  courtesy of Santa again (he shops at Home Depot and they are a little under $50 a piece - Pottery Barn ones were too much for Santa...roughly $160 a peice!
Grapevine  Squares:  $8.99 a piece at JoAnn's (the store, not my mother-in-law!)  I had 2 40% coupons for 2 of them.
Pictures:  Walgreens 10 cent picture deals  (the cardstock matting was about 69 cents a piece at JoAnn's)
Mirrors:  a friend of mine bought theses at a yard sale for a few bucks.  She couldn't use them so she gave them to me for FREE!  I did buy acrylic paint and crackle medium, so roughly a few bucks spent on that.
Round Grapevine Wreath:  under $6 - Jo Ann's (store).  They are $8.99 but I had another 40% off coupon.  I used the same paint from the mirrors and did sort of a 'wash' on it!

Pretty much everything else we had already.  I sold the zebra print chaise lounge that was in our room from before and was able to redo our bedroom, bathroom and some stuff for Ryne's room!

Also the pictures are experimental!  I am working in the "creative" setting on my new camera, so I'm still getting the hang of ISO, f stops, and such.  The lighting in our bedroom is terrible, so it's the best I can do for now!  Hopefully better pictures to come soon!

It's Lovely "Bobbin" Along!

I loved that song from the old classic, Bedknobs and Broomsticks.  Although I didn't need bedknobs and broomsticks.  I needed curtains and tie backs!
I love looking in Pottery Barn catalogs!  Who doesn't, but I can't afford everything that I want in it.  Most of our bedding and such in our bedroom is from Pottery Barn is was a one time, before I needed to revamp.    For Christmas three years ago, Mom got Adam and I the Pottery Barn curtains that we wanted.  She bought us two panels, which was enough to cover the two windows in our room and help keep the light out.  I've known for awhile that we needed two panels on each window, but those curtains are NOT cheap!    Our curtains are Dupioni Silk with a nice price tag of roughly $120 a panel, so buying 4 panels at once was a little steep for curtains.
Luckily, this Christmas season, they were on sale - still about $80 a panel, but that's better than $120.  So Mom got me two more panels!  Thanks Mom!  It definitely makes a difference in the appearance of the room, but I needed something to tie the curtains back with during the day so some sunlight could come in.  I like things that have significance to use as decor in our home, if at all possible.  We have some heirlooms and things hung up, but I wanted something heirloomy in our room!  So I adapted another expensive Pottery Barn idea and made it my own!

Pottery Barn recently had some spools used as decor to drape some swag - gotta love swag!  I couldn't afford the spools or the swag, but I figured I could find some cheaper somewhere else to use as tie backs for my curtains!

Back to the aforementioned "heirloomy" stuff.  Spools sort of have a significance with my family because my family is from mill towns in North Carolina.  Several people in my family worked in textile mills - even Dad did while in high school or college.  So the significance of the spools reminded me of my roots.

Now back to the title of the blog:  I couldn't find spools like these anywhere online.  I could find little ones but not big ones.  So I changed my search to "bobbins" and found lots of fun stuff on etsy...and they were pretty cheap!  So I bought four to use as tie backs for my curtains!

I know they aren't the bobbins that my actual family used or eve bobbins from the mills they worked in, but no one in the family really had any.  Who would think a bobbin would be significant later on down the road?  So etsy was the best I could do.  I scored 4 bobbins (it was only supposed to be 3 - bonus!) for around $13, which included shipping!

So far they are working out fabulously.  I have them hung with command strips for hanging pictures since I didn't want to damage the bobbins or the wall in order to hang them.  You can actually see the marks on the bobbin from where the thread was cut several times.  Also there is a stamp on one end that tells where the bobbins came from.  I think it's something a little different, fun, original and heirloomy!
